In an effort to shed some excess pounds and get fitter, healthier and just to a stage where a brisk walk to the car doesn’t have me breaking a sweat I decided that something had to drastically change with my diet and after some 1:1 time with a nutritionist I decided that Keto would be a good approach. At first I thought wonderful, I can enjoy all the Bacon I can eat, but this Keto myth was soon dispelled along with some other unhealthy Keto rumors.
Ultra-low carbohydrate diet
The (very simplified) science behind the Keto diet is that by restricting your diet to almost no carbs, your body kicks into a fat burning status of Ketosis. This is where the disclaimer comes in: always consult your doctor before maxing changes to your diet. Keto is not for everyone. Your results may vary and you should always loose weight in the safest possible way. Please speak to a doctor before embarking on a new diet regime.
Once in a Ketosis state, your body assimilates and burns your fat reserves more efficiently. You also have some bizarre side effects like Keto Flu, stinky breath, excessive pee’ing… but the results are also something to behold.
Getting to know Keto friendly foods
My first steps to achieving a state of Ketosis was to get myself informed of what foods I could and couldn’t eat, what dinners to make, what snacks I could have and what calorie, protein, fat and carb goal I was working towards. One of the more common mistakes I read prior to to starting my Keto journey was being ill-prepared in meal preparation and falling foul of high-carb snacks. Fortunately I discovered Diet Doctor – a wonderful low-carb and Keto friendly recipe bank.
Tracking my Keto journey macros
With a plan for the first weeks meals, I embarked on working out my ‘Macros’ – the amount of fat, protein and carbohydrate that would make up my diet. Another handy app I found was the Keto.App diet tracker with comprehensive calorie counting from a catalog of foods including the option to create your own recipes. Keeping within the Macro limits is key to achieving Ketosis
I embarked on my keto journey on the 1st November 2020, join me over the next few months as I update you on how I find the Keto lifestyle and if it works for me.
